India’s moment in the global automotive story is arriving faster than expected. The automotive industry’s future will be shaped not only by the evolution of vehicles and their technologies, but also by how rapidly supply chains adapt to support that evolution. From a supply chain perspective, four major trends are expected to define the industry over the next few years, Mr. Sukumar said.

First, supply chain resilience is becoming as important as cost efficiency. Recent geopolitical developments, supply disruptions and trade realignments have exposed the risks of highly concentrated sourcing models. Automotive companies are increasingly diversifying supplier bases, regionalising production networks and adopting strategies to build greater agility, continuity and risk mitigation into their supply chains.

Second, electrification is creating entirely new supply chain ecosystems. As electric vehicle adoption grows, the focus is shifting beyond vehicle assembly to securing reliable supplies of batteries, critical minerals and specialised components. At the same time, battery recycling, reverse logistics and circular supply chains are emerging as important areas that will require new capabilities and infrastructure.

Third, digitalisation is transforming supply chain operations. Automotive manufacturers are increasingly adopting smart manufacturing, seeking real-time visibility, AI-driven forecasting, predictive analytics and control tower solutions to manage growing supply chain complexity. “The ability to orchestrate end-to-end supply chains, anticipate disruptions, optimise inventory and make faster decisions across global networks is becoming a critical competitive differentiator,” he said.

Fourth, sustainability is increasingly influencing supply chain design. Customers, investors and regulators are placing greater emphasis on reducing emissions across the value chain. This is driving demand for greener logistics solutions, sustainable sourcing practices, circular economy initiatives and greater transparency in carbon reporting.

“Ultimately, the automotive supply chains of the future will be defined by resilience, digital intelligence, sustainability and localisation. Organisations that can combine technology, domain expertise and end-to-end supply chain capabilities to build agile, future-ready networks will be best positioned to succeed in an increasingly dynamic market environment,” he highlighted.
