The Next Chapter in India’s Mobility Story
India’s mobility story has long been driven by road transport, with buses forming the backbone of the nation’s public transportation system. Every day, an estimated 40 crore passenger journeys are made through public and private bus networks, connecting people to work, education, healthcare and economic opportunities. As cities expand and urbanisation accelerates, the need for cleaner, smarter and more efficient public transport has never been greater.
The transition to electric buses is far more than a technological upgrade. It represents a practical approach to mobility, where innovation is driven by operational efficiency, sustainability and real-world needs. Electric buses are enabling India to reimagine public transportation while balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
India’s Automotive Industry is Entering a New Era
India has emerged as one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturing hubs. The sector contributes around 7.1 percent to the country’s GDP, nearly 49 percent of manufacturing GDP, and supports over 37 million jobs.
Today, India is the third-largest automobile market globally, producing over 28 million vehicles annually. The industry’s next phase will be defined not just by production volumes but by its ability to embrace clean technologies and sustainable mobility.
Commercial vehicles, particularly buses, are central to this transformation. Unlike personal mobility, investments in public transport benefit millions of commuters every day while reducing congestion, improving urban air quality and lowering dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Why Electric Buses Matter
Among all electric vehicle categories, commercial vehicles offer some of the highest environmental and social benefits.
A single city bus can replace 40–50 passenger cars, easing congestion while transporting hundreds of passengers daily. With nearly 20 lakh buses operating across India—including around 1.9 million private buses and 1.5 lakh State Transport Undertaking buses— the opportunity to decarbonise public transport is immense.
Each electric bus contributes to lower emissions, quieter cities, reduced fuel consumption, better public health and an improved commuter experience.
From Pilot Projects to Mainstream Mobility
Less than a decade ago, electric buses were largely viewed as pilot projects due to concerns over battery performance, charging infrastructure, operational reliability and lifecycle costs.
Today, India has over 19,000 electric buses operating across cities, airports, industrial campuses and institutional fleets. While they currently account for only about 5 percent of annual bus sales, industry estimates suggest this could exceed 50 percent by 2035.
This transition has been driven by supportive government policies and compelling economics. Lower energy costs, reduced maintenance requirements and a lower cost per kilometre than diesel buses have made electric buses commercially viable. Improved technology and greater confidence among transport authorities and private operators have transformed them into scalable mobility solutions.
Policy is Creating Strong Industry Momentum
The rapid evolution of India’s electric bus industry has been supported by progressive government policies.
The FAME I and II programmes laid the foundation for early adoption by incentivising electric buses and encouraging domestic manufacturing. Building on this, the PM eBus Sewa initiative aims to deploy 10,000 air-conditioned electric buses across 116 cities.
The recently introduced PM eBus Sewa Payment Security Mechanism is expected to facilitate the deployment of over 38,000 electric buses between FY25 and FY29 by strengthening financial confidence among transport authorities. Along with the PM E-DRIVE initiative, these programmes are creating one of the world’s largest public transport electrification ecosystems.
Technology is Driving Commercial Maturity
Technology has advanced significantly over the past decade. Battery energy density has improved, charging times have reduced, battery life has increased, and thermal management systems have become more sophisticated. Modern electric buses now deliver 250–350 km of range on a single charge, comfortably meeting the daily requirements of most urban transit routes.
Electric buses have also evolved into highly connected vehicles equipped with telematics, predictive diagnostics, battery analytics, regenerative braking, remote monitoring and intelligent fleet management systems. These capabilities maximise uptime, optimise maintenance and improve operational efficiency, making today’s electric bus an intelligent mobility platform powered by data.
Localization is Strengthening India’s Competitiveness
Rapid localisation under the Make in India initiative is strengthening India’s electric mobility ecosystem. Domestic capabilities now span batteries, electric drivetrains, power electronics, vehicle software and charging infrastructure, improving supply chain resilience while reducing costs.
Today, almost every major EV component—except battery cells—can be designed and manufactured at scale within India. As production volumes grow and the supplier ecosystem matures, the country is well positioned to improve affordability, accelerate innovation and establish itself as a global manufacturing hub for electric mobility.
Infrastructure is Enabling Large-Scale Adoption
Charging infrastructure has expanded significantly alongside EV adoption. Depot-based charging remains the preferred model for city operations, while fast and opportunity charging technologies are improving operational flexibility.
Charging depots are increasingly being integrated with renewable energy, smart energy management systems and battery storage solutions, helping cities improve overall energy efficiency while reducing emissions beyond the vehicle itself. Infrastructure is no longer simply keeping pace with electric mobility—it is enabling its growth.

The Road Ahead
India’s electric bus industry has entered a defining phase of growth. Although electric buses currently account for only around 5 percent of the overall bus market, improving economics, technological maturity and increasing participation from private fleet operators are expected to accelerate adoption significantly over the coming decade.
The next phase will be driven by battery cell localisation, AI-powered fleet management, predictive maintenance, battery recycling, circular economy practices, renewable energy-integrated charging infrastructure and increasingly connected public transport systems. At the same time, widespread public charging infrastructure and innovative financing models will be critical to supporting large-scale fleet electrification.
The convergence of progressive policy, technological innovation, industrial capability and growing public acceptance has laid the foundation for India’s electric mobility revolution. The focus is no longer simply on replacing diesel buses but on creating an integrated public transport ecosystem that is cleaner, smarter, more resilient and economically sustainable.
India has repeatedly demonstrated that when policy, technology and industry work together, transformation happens at scale. As innovation becomes increasingly accessible and adoption gathers momentum, the country is well positioned to emerge as a global leader in sustainable public mobility.
