The company believes early adoption and operational expertise will define the next phase of India’s electric mobility journey.

As India’s public mobility ecosystem moves towards a cleaner future, electric buses are expected to play a defining role across city, school, and staff transportation. According to Mr. Sanyam Gandhi, Whole-Time Director, Chartered Speed, the transition will be driven not only by sustainability goals but also by economics, operational maturity, and growing confidence among operators.
Mr. Gandhi believes that by 2030, electric buses could account for as much as 50% of new bus sales across these segments. Adoption is already gaining momentum, supported by governments, corporates, and educational institutions increasingly embracing cleaner mobility solutions.
Early Adoption Creating Long-Term Advantages
“The future belongs to operators who adopt electric mobility early, gain operational expertise and make the transition commercially viable for customers,” said Mr. Gandhi.
While the high upfront cost of electric buses remains a challenge, the total cost of ownership already favours EVs in several urban applications with high vehicle utilisation. In school transportation, Chartered Speed has demonstrated that operating costs can remain almost at par with conventional buses, with only a marginal increase in select cases.
For staff and city buses operating over 180–200 km daily, electric mobility already presents a compelling business case and is expected to become even more attractive by 2030. Intercity operations, however, still require products that can match the reliability, service ecosystem, and customer confidence associated with premium diesel coaches.
Building Experience Before the Industry Scales
Chartered Speed has focused on building deep electric fleet management capabilities ahead of the broader market. The company introduced its first electric city buses in 2019, followed by electric staff buses in 2021 and electric school buses in 2023. Having successfully completed these deployments, the company is now operating electric buses at scale and is executing projects involving nearly 3,000 electric buses across almost 18 cities under the PM e-Bus Sewa and PM E-Drive schemes, with buses being inducted and becoming operational in phases.
Mr. Gandhi expects more fleet operators to adopt a dual-fuel strategy, balancing conventional fuels with electric mobility to manage operational risks. Global fuel market volatility has also accelerated customer interest in EV adoption.
“By 2030, experience in operating electric fleets will become as important as owning them. Operators who build that expertise today will lead tomorrow’s mobility ecosystem,” shared Mr. Gandhi.
Looking ahead, Chartered Speed is exploring opportunities in carbon markets to help customers offset the remaining cost gap while unlocking additional financial value through carbon credits and emissions reduction initiatives.
By 2030, Chartered Speed aims to combine large-scale EV deployment with efficient fleet execution to help build a commercially sustainable and environmentally responsible public transport ecosystem.
