PLI schemes must include R&D as it could attract companies with proven technology to set up manufacturing and export hubs, says, Mr. Amarnath Ramachandran, MD, Arx Mining & Construction Equipment.

There are many interesting trends in the runup to 2030 in the Indian Construction & Mining industry. The key driver, according to Mr. Ramachandran, is explosive growth. The industry is expected to grow at least threefold. Make in India initiatives with the new proposed PLI schemes, are targeted at generating large inflows for CAPEX, excluding investments in land and R&D.
Green Machinery emerges taking three forms: electric vehicles, now crossing over from automotive into construction with grid-based solutions in developed mines and lithium battery vehicles in remote areas; dual-fuel engines running on ethanol or HVO; and hydrogen-powered IC engines, currently under trial for automotive applications and expected to enter construction in time.
Increase in automation and smart technology is yet another trend. Aggregate controllers across engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems communicate via CANBUS networks, generating data that enables predictive maintenance and performance monitoring. On the worksite, high-tech optical surveying, blade control on graders, autonomous emergency braking, and autonomous drilling are increasingly available.
The Next Phase
By 2030, the company should be an established player in four core areas, he mentioned.
Construction Equipment: Consolidating the motor grader range with diesel, electric, and autonomous emergency braking options, plus 3D laser adaptability for automatic blade and grade control. Distribution and service network to be strengthened organically or through an established partner.
Mining Equipment: Three sizes of large motor graders — 18T, 21T, and 32T — suited to mines running different dumper sizes, alongside multiple attachments for the underground utility vehicle, consolidated blasthole and DTH drill options, an exploratory drilling head for comprehensive drilling solutions, and potential large front-end loaders to complement the grader range.
Defence Portfolio: Expanding into various sizes of knuckle-boom cranes, aircraft towing tractors, and specialised platforms.
Cargo Handling Equipment: Strengthening the Kalmar partnership to widen the Indital portfolio for global sales, building on an existing range of forklifts, empty container handlers, and loaded and empty container reach stackers.
Arx wants its workplace filled with bright, dedicated people who take pride in building world-class equipment for global markets. It aims for ordinary people, extraordinary outcomes — driven by teamwork and collaborative innovation,” he added.
“Leading infrastructure companies now demand aggressive buyback terms from OEMs to lock in fixed project costs, while short-term rentals — well before end of lifecycle — are growing, as rental operators handle all logistics.”
