SWITCH Mobility’s Bet on India’s E-CV Future

SWITCH Mobility, pioneered the two to 3.5 tonne e-commercial vehicle segment in India, has held its ground ever since, commanding a market share close to 40%. And with price parity between electric and diesel vehicles narrowing rapidly in the sub-2 tonne category, the momentum is only building, says the CEO of the company Mr. Ganesh Mani.

India’s electric commercial vehicle (CV) market is vast and varied — stretching from small last-mile delivery vans to massive 55-tonne trucks. And within this sprawling landscape, the story of growth is really being written at the lighter end of the spectrum.

According to Mr. Mani, the segment up to 7.5 tonnes — particularly the 2 to 3.5 tonne category — is where the action is most visible right now. “SWITCH Mobility was the first to bring a product to this segment and continues to hold a commanding 40% market share. Growth of 35–40% is expected in the coming years,” he mentioned.

Buses tell a different story, driven largely by government push. Schemes like FAME 1, FAME 2, and PM e-Bus Sewa, alongside upcoming tenders targeting Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities, are building steady momentum. By 2030, electric buses could account for 30% of the overall bus market — ambitious but increasingly plausible. Last-mile passenger connectivity linking metros to smaller assembly points is another area the industry is watching closely.

Charging infrastructure remains the missing piece. The network has grown but nowhere near fast enough — India needs a million charging points, yet the count remains in the tens of thousands. For CVS this gap matters.

Every kilowatt-hour of unnecessary battery carried as dead weight is a direct hit on a driver’s livelihood and a fleet operator’s margins. Mr. Mani believes that three things will determine whether a fleet operator commits to electric — product reliability, total cost of ownership (TCO), and after-sales support. The company delivers on all three.

Looking ahead, the company plans to launch three to four products by 2030 across its IeV3 and IeV4 range, ensuring it can serve a wider set of customer needs. Its dealer network, already over 100 strong, is set to triple — so that support is never far away when it is needed most.

“The road to electrification in CV will not be without bumps. We are clearly positioning ourselves to be in the driver’s seat when the market shifts into a higher gear,” Mr. Mani added.

“With over 75 years of industry presence and more than 3,000 electric vehicles already on Indian roads, SWITCH Mobility is a company with proven credentials and a clear plan.”
