Kobelco Reinforces Indian Footprint with Localized 20-Tonne Excavator Range and ‘Value Excavation’ Strategy

In a bid to expand its market share in India’s core earthmoving segment, Kobelco Construction Equipment India Pvt. Ltd. (KCEI) has unveiled three new variants in the 19.1 – 24 tonne excavator category (SK210, SK215LC, and SK230XDLC). Built at its manufacturing hub in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, the new line-up is spearheaded by the company’s ‘Value Excavation’ philosophy – a strategic push designed to lower operational costs, increase local sourcing, and enhance lifecycle economics for fleet operators.

Driving Down Total Cost of Ownership

A major driver behind the new product lineup is purposeful indigenization, particularly around the powertrain. By moving key component sourcing closer to the market, Kobelco aims to insulate customers from global supply chain fluctuations while directly reducing hourly operational costs. Speaking on how this approach translates into tangible benefits for fleet managers, Moses Eddy, Director – Kobelco Construction Equipment India Pvt. Ltd. (KCEI), explained:

“Currently, we have some very advantageous components imported from Japan. However, when you import from Japan, there are many factors like forex, logistics costs, and the geopolitical situation, which can increase the overall machine and maintenance costs. By indigenizing the engine, the cost is in our control, and the customer will be able to see the benefit of that. Also, when you localize engines with the same technology, your first service cost is much cheaper, which converts directly into a lower per-hour cost. So, the customer will enjoy a good benefit in overall life cycle costs.”

Engineered for Efficiency and Future Emissions

The new excavator series is powered by a 150 HP Cummins F4.5 CRDI engine, designed to deliver high digging performance without compromising on fuel economy. Alongside optimized fuel consumption, the extended maintenance intervals – stretching hydraulic oil life to 6,000 hours and filter changes to 2,000 hours – are intended to maximize job-site uptime and streamline service schedules.

Furthermore, Kobelco has aligned its engine architecture with upcoming regulatory shifts; ensuring machines remain compliant and future-ready.

“Value excavation is directly tied to our engineering choices. We could have easily gone with a standard 6-cylinder non-emission engine, but we specifically chose this CRDI engine with CEV-4 emission norms readiness. This ensures that our customers are future-ready while operating machines that are technologically superior to others in the market. Furthermore, for customers who have used Kobelco machines in the past, they will get the benchmark performance they expect, while non-Kobelco fleet owners who are currently spending heavily on fuel should evaluate these machines to experience the operational savings,” he noted.

Expanding Local Content and Segment Reach

Local sourcing for Kobelco’s 20-tonne class has jumped significantly from 48% in previous generations to nearly 68% today. While high-end mechatronics and specialized hydraulic components continue to be sourced from Japan to maintain quality standards, local engine integration has provided a major boost to production economics.

This localization drive allows KCEI to aggressively target growth in the 20-tonne market – the primary volume driver for Indian construction equipment. While Kobelco holds strong double-digit market shares in heavier classes, expanding its presence in the mid-size segment represents its next key growth phase.

“The 20-tonne segment is the backbone of the Indian excavator market. It is a massive, growing space, and it presented an opportunity where our potential was not fully tapped. While we hold strong positions elsewhere, such as 25% in the 38-tonne class and 17% in the 50-tonne class, our share here was around 5 to 6%. Even a 1 or 2% market share increase in this high-volume segment yields substantial numbers, and that is precisely what we are aiming for with these three tailored variants,” he added.

Strengthening Aftermarket Reach in Remote Terrain

To back up its expanded machine portfolio, KCEI is upgrading its nationwide dealer network, which currently spans over 30 dealer partners. Recognizing that machine sales depend entirely on reliable product support, Kobelco is rolling out specialized service models to maintain high equipment uptime in challenging geographies across Tier-2, Tier-3, and remote infrastructure corridors.

“At Kobelco, we have a strong aftermarket division dedicated to continuous customer support. We have tailored plans to strengthen our service reach in the Himalayas, the Northeast, and previously unreached regions. What works in a major city cannot simply be applied to remote job sites, so we are equipping our dealers with better travel infrastructure, comfort, and advanced remote tracking. Whether in Kargil, Leh, Ladakh, or Arunachal Pradesh, we are already leading, and we will leverage AI and remote diagnostics to further enhance uptime. As the saying goes, the first machine is sold by sales, but every subsequent machine is sold by support,” he concluded.
