As the automotive and commercial mobility industry accelerates towards electrification and lower emissions, aluminium is expected to play a far greater role in vehicle engineering. According to Ms. Kopal Agrawal, CEO – Aluminium Downstream Business, Hindalco Industries, the industry’s next phase will be driven by lightweighting, advanced engineering and closer collaboration between material suppliers and OEMs to develop performance-oriented mobility solutions.

By 2030, the mobility industry will increasingly move towards lightweight vehicle architectures to improve energy efficiency, safety and sustainability. Electrification, stricter emission norms and the need for longer EV range will accelerate aluminium adoption across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, buses and rail applications.

Ms. Agrawal believes the industry’s focus will shift beyond supplying raw materials to engineering complete mobility solutions. Early collaboration between OEMs and technology partners will become critical, with expertise in alloy development, joining technologies, simulation and component validation playing an increasingly important role. Advanced manufacturing processes such as friction stir welding, laser welding and hybrid joining will enable the production of complex structural components, while integrated validation at the material, component and system levels will help reduce development time and improve product reliability.

She also noted that lifecycle value, rather than upfront material cost, will increasingly influence purchasing decisions. Aluminium’s recyclability, lightweighting benefits, improved payload capacity and lower energy consumption make it an important enabler of cleaner and more efficient mobility.

Hindalco is preparing for this transformation by strengthening its position as an engineering-led mobility solutions partner rather than simply a metal supplier. The company has invested in advanced automotive manufacturing facilities, particularly at Chakan, equipped with state-of-the-art joining technologies to produce critical EV and structural aluminium components at scale.

Its expanding product portfolio includes EV battery enclosures, cooling plates, crash boxes, structural extrusions, ABS blocks, electrical busbars and other production-ready aluminium solutions for modern mobility platforms.

Ms. Agrawal shared that Hindalco’s integrated value chain, spanning alloy production to finished components, provides complete control over quality, performance and consistency while enabling faster product development. The company is also investing in simulation, prototyping, testing and application engineering to support customers from the design stage through production.

Looking towards 2030, Hindalco aims to deepen its partnerships with OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, expand localisation and accelerate the adoption of engineered aluminium solutions.
