The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), a division of the National Automotive Testing Research & Development Infrastructure Project (NATRIP), in association with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, organized an international symposium on Inspection & Certification (iSIC-2014) in New Delhi on November 20 and 21.

The symposium was inaugurated by Mr. P. Radhakrishnan, Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, in the presence of Mr. Ambuj Sharma, Department of Heavy Industry, Mr. Dinesh Tyagi, Director – ICAT, and Mr. M.J. Singh, Convener – iSIC-2014.

In his address, Mr. Radhakrishnan stated that his Ministry has decided to put in place a suitably designed inspection and maintenance system for vehicles and has sanctioned 10 model automated inspection and certification centres, one each in Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana), Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, U.P. and Delhi on a pilot basis. Work relating to these centres is in progress, and a few of them will be operational within this financial year.

Around 250 symposium participants from the automotive industry have benefited from the papers and presentations on the inspection and certification of vehicles. The professionals who attended it were related directly or indirectly to the automotive and general test-lane manufacturers / operators.

The symposium also provided an opportunity to the States / UTs and the transport department to understand the necessity and importance of vehicle inspection and maintenance in India which goes a long way in setting up and operating the I&C centres in respective States. The two-day deliberations should aid smooth implementation of inspection and certification centres.

The presentation on “Roadworthiness through Inspection” allowed speakers to discuss and present international papers on topics such as challenges of emerging technology for technical inspection / certification & maintenance, periodic technical inspection (PTI) / road safety inspection (RSI), international strategies / developments in improving roadworthiness inspection and mobile stations for road and enforcement.
