WABCO India Wins 2017 Road Safety Product and Solution Award from FICCI

Mr. P Kaniappan, Managing Director, WABCO India Limited

WABCO India has recently won the 2017 Road Safety Product and Solution Award from the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). This award was presented to WABCO recognizing its initiative to enhance the safety of trailers in-country by equipping them with industry-leading anti-lock braking systems (ABS).

“We at WABCO are committed to the cause of vehicle safety and are delighted to receive this award from FICCI which is a recognition of our continued commitment to safety and the environment. We have developed breakthrough technologies over many years and are proud to have pioneered the introduction of ABS in India which enhances the safety of commercial vehicles. We furthered our overarching goal of improving vehicle safety by fitting trailers with ABS” said Mr. P Kaniappan, Managing Director, WABCO India Limited.

“We remain committed to innovate and advance vehicle safety and efficiency, thereby, supporting the Government of India’s vision to reduce road accidents in the country” he added.

In 2017, the Ministry of Surface Transport mandated ABS in trailers to prevent trailer skidding and swing. WABCO trailer ABS is the first electronic system fitted on Indian trailers that monitors and controls wheel speed of the trailer during braking. WABCO trailer ABS enhances steering control and vehicle stability during braking maneuvers and is engineered to comply with braking legislation for commercial vehicles.

The fitment of ABS on the trailer involves upgradation of the trailers. WABCO followed a multi-pronged approach of bringing together key stakeholders such as trailer manufacturers, certifying authorities like the Automotive Research Association of India, the International Centre for Automotive Technology, state registering authorities, motor vehicle inspectors and regional transport officials. The collaborative approach resulted in seamless implementation of ABS on trailers across India.

The hazardous goods trailers for petroleum and industrial gases represent some of the vehicles that have been fitted with WABCO’s ABS technology. WABCO India supported approximately 50 trailer manufacturers and large trailer operators for effective implementation of this initiative. Fleets which have adopted trailer ABS confirm enhanced vehicle safety, as well as improved fuel efficiency and tyre life.

FICCI has instituted Road Safety Awards to recognize corporate initiatives to improve road safety. This year, FICCI received more than 60 entries from businesses across various categories, including Corporate Safe Driving, Road Safety Analysis and Action, Road Safety Product and Solution, Road Safety in the Community, Global Road Safety and Safe Vehicles.
