TN’s thrust on road infrastructure

State places order for 1,200 new buses

For any developed economy, the infrastructure development more particularly, the roads, plays a crucial role. Tamil Nadu which has already emerged as the ‘Detroit of the East’ with a lion’s share of investment in the automotive sector has recently announced the development of road projects in the State worth over $387 million. The projects include upgradation of the state highway between Oragadam, an industrial belt, and Singaperumalkoil, on the city outskirts, to six-lanes at a cost of $19.95 million and conversion of ring road around Madurai City to four lanes at a cost of $33.25 million. Also, $41.56 million would be spent for laying roads with pedestrian walkway and drainage in newly-added areas of the Chennai Corporation and two bridges would come up near the IT Corridor at a cost of $30.84 million.

MTC-Volvo-busAnother major initiative by the State Government is the roll-out of 1,200 new buses this year, replacing the old ones in its fleet, under the major modernisation drive taken by Chief Minister, Ms. J. Jayalalithaa. In fact, Tamil Nadu has been rated the best among all states in the country for successfully operating and providing customer-friendly public transportation system. Recently, the state also topped the charts in number domestic tourists as well.
