L&T and IIT Madras-incubated TuTr Hyperloop sign MoU to explore next-generation mobility projects

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with TuTr Hyperloop Private Ltd, an IIT Madras-incubated deep-tech start-up, to explore the development and deployment of next-generation mobility technologies and infrastructure in India. The MoU sets a framework for the two to pursue opportunities together, and any specific project will need a separate agreement. The MoU is a non-binding framework and does not announce a specific project, a timeline or any investment.

The partnership combines L&T’s engineering, procurement and construction expertise with TuTr Hyperloop’s indigenous electromagnetic propulsion technology. The two will assess opportunities in areas such as Linear Induction Motor-based propulsion, vacuum tube infrastructure, pressure management, civil and structural works, electrical infrastructure, signalling, telecommunications and systems integration. They will also talk to prospective customers to evaluate technical feasibility, commercial viability and implementation needs. Possible applications include freight and logistics, port connectivity and industrial transportation.

TuTr Hyperloop plans to develop modular, indigenous mobility technologies, starting with Linear Induction Motor-based systems and moving towards magnetic levitation and vacuum-based transport.

Mr. S V Desai, Whole-Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Infrastructure) at L&T, said hyperloop could redefine the movement of people and goods, but that turning the technology into practical deployment needs strong engineering, scalable infrastructure and close collaboration. Prof. Satya Chakravarthy of IIT Madras called the partnership an encouraging step towards turning indigenous innovation into deployable solutions. TuTr Hyperloop Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Aravind S Bharadwaj said the aim is to work on commercialising the technologies together.
