EVM Scania firing on all cylinders

The EVM Group was formed in 1935 in Kerala as a small entrepreneurial company. Today, the group has spread its wings into various sectors like cultivation and selling of hill produce, exporting spices, supply of natural rubber and rubber products to major OEMs, etc. In the commercial vehicle space, EVM is a dealer for Scania Commercial Vehicles India and is one of the fastest growing network partners in the country for the Swedish CV maker. Having gone from two to 52 coaches during its first year of operations, the company has had an amazing start. On the truck side, EVM has sold two G460 pullers, one of them being a customized first-of-its-kind ‘Jewellery on Wheels’ vehicle for Chemmanur Jewellers.

A well-experienced industrialist and son of Mr. E.M. Johny, Chairman, EVM Group, Mr. Sabu Johny, Chairman and Managing Director, EVM Motors, takes care of the dealership, its sales, strategic business initiatives and a variety of other corporate functions. We had an interaction with Mr. Jimmy Jose, Managing Partner, EVM Heavy Commercial Vehicles and Scania dealer.

Says Mr. Jose: “We are doing exceptionally well in the intercity bus market and have received very good acceptance. Going forward, we would like to grow beyond traditional segments and enter into city and tourist buses. We have already sold couple of buses in the tourism segment and are encouraged by the response from our customers.”

EVM is doing well in terms of sales and service with multiple touch points and mobile service across Kerala and plans to expand further in the coming years. The company will be adding more bays to support its customers up to the state border. EVM also plans to promote its multi-axle coaches by pitching them against the traditional single-axle vehicles. The steerable tag-axle coach from Scania has demonstrated its capability very well in the hilly parts of Kerala, especially in regions like Wayanad.

“KSRTC is operating our buses from Wayanad to Mysore. The drivers feel comfortable driving them in sharp bends. We have demonstrated our capability and expect the sales to increase multi-fold in new segments”, adds Mr. Jose.

EVM is eagerly looking forward to the launch of Scania’s much-awaited city bus and wants to take a major pie in the premium segment. The company has a sales target of 54 buses for the current year and hopes to achieve it comfortably with the current sales and orders in hand.
