The new VDL Bus Group to launch VDL Futura 3 at Busworld Europe

Two years ago at Busworld VDL Bus & Coach showcased a mock-up of the new Futura coach of the third generation. Now at the upcoming Busworld 2025 it will fulfil the promise and under the MOVE.TOGETHER flag, it proudly presents the new VDL Futura 3 and officially launches the new bus company VDL Bus Group, combining VDL Bus & Coach and VDL Van Hool. Therefore VDL Bus Group will have a prominent presence at Busworld 2025.

The launch of the third-generation VDL Futura is a particular highlight at Busworld, as the Futura 3 will be presented to the general public for the first time. Two years ago the international trade press was granted a glimpse of the new coach and in the meantime also some “spy-pictures” came available. In relation to the “old” Futura the front is characterized by the curved, convex windshield for improved aerodynamics and the rear has a sharp (Edge) design, which also benefits the aerodynamics. The EU General Safety Regulation (GSR) directive have prompted VDL to create a completely new platform for the Futura, with a modular powertrain architecture suitable for various drivelines. Initially, the Futura will be launched with a diesel powertrain. Back then the trade

press was told that the new Futura is expected to be 400 kilograms lighter than its predecessor, making it ready for installation with heavy-duty batteries while retaining full passenger capacity. The driver will enjoy a new cockpit with a completely redesigned instrument panel, new GSR-compliant driver assistance systems, and new front crash protection. All together VDL stipulates that the Futura 3 will use 15% less fuel which means a big step forward in terms of costs for the vehicle’s entire service life. The new coach features a completely new interior concept, an optimised driver environment with improved sight lines, intuitive controls and digital support; an updated exterior design that enhances aerodynamics and brand identity; advanced safety and assistance systems.

The integration of VDL Bus & Coach and VDL Van Hool will create one bus company: VDL Bus Group. This new company will operate with two complementary brands – VDL and Van Hool – each conveying its own identity and market focus. Both brands will be represented at Busworld. Production at VDL Bus Group is organised geographically by vehicle type and make. The VDL Citea for public transport is built at the factory in Roeselare, Belgium. The VDL Futura coaches are produced in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands. Macedonia is the place for production of the Van Hool coaches. Besides two VDL Futura 3 coaches, a VDL Citea 13.5-metre Low Entry bus will be on display at Busworld. Furthermore, an Astron super high-decker and an Astromega double-decker will be exhibited on behalf of Van Hool. VDL Bus Group will thus position itself with 5 buses in both the coach market and the public transport market.
