SMK’s Capella GT: Setting New Standards in Bus Body Design

Vaibhav Narang, Director

S.M. Kannappa Automobiles (SMK), incorporated in 1968 and operating under the ‘Prakash’ brand, has built a reputation over five decades as a leading luxury bus body-builder in India. In a bold move showcasing its engineering prowess, SMK’s highly successful bus models Capella and Vega have underlined the company’s strengths in innovation and high-end design. Now, under the leadership of Vaibhav Narang, Director, and Team, the company is steering confidently into the future with the upgraded Capella GT and an ambitious expansion strategy.

Reflecting on the success of the Capella series, Kesavan T Director- Technical remarked, “The Capella model has cemented its place as a reliable and comfortable solution for both private operators and State Transport Undertakings (STUs). Its brand equity is built on unmatched body strength and design excellence that rival global players.” Recognising the need to stay ahead of market expectations, SMK has launched the upgraded Capella GT, introducing modern design elements and enhanced performance features.

Capella GT: A Bold Leap in Design and Efficiency

The Capella GT represents a significant upgrade over the original Capella model. According to SMK, the Capella GT is not merely a cosmetic update but a fundamental redesign focusing on lighter weight, better efficiency, and improved passenger comfort. A major innovation in the Capella GT is the shift from traditional metal and aluminium AC ducts to advanced ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic components. “This new material reduces the overall weight of the bus by 600 to 800 kilograms, which translates directly into improved fuel efficiency and operational savings for operators,” as explained.

Moreover, the new design introduces a modular construction approach, which helps reduce manufacturing cycle time and supports standardisation — a necessary step to comply with the upcoming AIS 153 safety regulations. “We are moving away from fully customised interiors toward offering two or three standardised themes. This not only aligns with new compliance needs but also enhances fit and finish,” Kesavan added.

The Capella GT has already demonstrated strong market traction. It was showcased in a multi-axle 15-metre prototype for Ashok Leyland at the Auto Expo, and initial deliveries have begun, including recent units to operators in Tamil Nadu. These changes are informed by real-world user experiences, ensuring a safer and more comfortable ride.

Scaling Up: Capacity, Expansion, and Market Reach

SMK’s market strength is evident in its current production figures. The company rolls out around 250 vehicles per month and plans to scale up to 450 per month, targeting an annual capacity of 6,000 buses within the next two years. “We are expanding capacity at our Kolar plant and other facilities, and although finding the right manpower is a challenge, we are focused on ramping up,” Kesavan T shared.

The company operates four plants around Bangalore, including major expansions at Kolar where an additional 1,00,000 square feet of space has been added. SMK’s footprint spans pan-India, serving customers from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and exporting to markets like Mauritius, Sri Lanka, South Africa and beyond.

Commitment to Quality, Safety, and Supplier Excellence

SMK’s unwavering focus on quality is underpinned by its long-standing relationships with top-tier suppliers. “We buy only the best materials, even if it means paying more per part. We never compromise on quality — this is what ensures our buses last up to 15–20 years with proper maintenance and retain higher resale value,” Kesavan stated. From fire-retardant plywood and UV-resistant panels to high-grade steel and premium glass, SMK sources only genuine components to safeguard passengers and maximise lifecycle value.

Furthermore, the company’s approach to safety and compliance is robust. With the upcoming AIS 153 regulations, SMK is working closely with OEMs and national testing agencies like ARAI and GARC to secure necessary certifications and transition to a complete bus manufacturer. “We are building buses on OEM platforms, and our relationship with OEMs like Ashok Leyland, VECV, Switch Mobility, MC2 Mobility and other OEM’s is a key pillar of our strategy,” Kesavan explained. Despite regulatory complexities, he views this evolution as a positive step towards enhancing safety standards and aligning bus body builders with global OEM practices.

Looking Ahead: Vision and Industry Outlook

SMK Team’s deep technical insight and passion for continuous improvement underscore SMK’s trajectory as a trusted partner for operators nationwide. “We often travel on our buses – to directly experience and assess areas of improvement. We learn not just from our products but also from competitors, adopting best practices to stay ahead,” Kesavan shared.

SMK’s core team

While the industry faces challenges in terms of tighter regulations and cost pressures, SMK believes this will ultimately drive the sector towards higher safety standards and stronger market maturity. SMK’s commitment to quality, safety, and technical excellence positions it strongly to navigate future challenges and seize emerging opportunities.

With its unwavering focus on innovation, operational scale, and customer trust, SMK’s Capella GT stands as a bold statement of the company’s future-ready vision — a milestone on its journey to redefine bus mobility in India and beyond.
