Royal Durga Logistics & Eicher: A Roadmap to Safe School Commutes

The journey of Royal Durga Logistics Private Limited (RDL) is a story of vision, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. From humble beginnings in 1969, with a single bus operating city-to-city routes, RDL has evolved into one of South India’s leading school transport service providers. Today, the company serves 53,000 students, 3,000 teachers, across 50+ schools in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Coimbatore, operating a fleet of 1,300+ buses, including 745 Eicher school buses that have become central to the company’s growth and operational success.

Speaking about the origins of the company, Mr. Deepak Rajgopal, Managing Director of RDL, reflects on his second-generation legacy. “The company was founded by my parents, Mr. V. Rajgopal and Mrs. Lakshmi Rajgopal, in 1969. Back then, we started with just one bus, focused on city-to-city transportation. It was a modest beginning, but my parents instilled the values of hard work, discipline, and reliability, which continue to guide us to this day.”

In 2000, RDL diversified into school transport, a domain that demanded a different approach, one that prioritized safety, reliability, and confidentiality. “School transportation is not just about moving children from point A to B; it is about ensuring their safety, comfort, and timely arrival. It requires meticulous planning and disciplined execution,” explains Deepak Rajgopal.

The company’s association with Eicher began in 2016 and has grown stronger over the years. “Our partnership with Eicher is built on mutual respect and trust. That respect is the cornerstone of our relationship, and it has only strengthened with time,” says Deepak Rajgopal.

Eicher’s reputation for robust engineering, safety, and reliability made it an ideal partner for RDL. “The buses themselves are designed to the highest global standards, incorporating safety features that are benchmarked internationally. When you associate with a brand like Eicher, which collaborates with Volvo — a global leader in vehicle safety — you know that you are working with cutting-edge technology.”

Safety is at the heart of RDL’s operations, and Eicher buses have played a pivotal role in enhancing the company’s safety protocols. “Every major safety feature available globally is now incorporated in Eicher buses sold domestically,” says Deepak Rajgopal. “From anti-lock braking systems and FDSS to noise reduction, fuel efficiency, and operational safety, Eicher has left no stone unturned. Safety is considered at every stage — from design to execution — ensuring that children travel in secure, reliable vehicles.”

The impact of onboard technology is equally significant. RDL’s operational framework engages four key stakeholders — schools, parents, children, and the community. “We live in a fast-paced world where even minor delays can create stress. Notifications, SMS alerts, and real-time updates prevent panic and ensure children are picked up safely. CCTV cameras monitored live at our control center provide an additional layer of accountability. Features such as seat belts, emergency doors, driver-operated doors, and safety grills further reinforce a culture of safety,” he explains.

Technology alone cannot guarantee safety — well-trained personnel are equally important. RDL employs 1,400 drivers, all of whom receive continuous training and monitoring. “Eicher emphasizes driver training as a critical component of fleet safety. Each driver undergoes two training sessions of two hours per academic year. They are trained not only in vehicle handling and technology but also in responsible behavior. After all, children look up to drivers as role models,” notes Deepak Rajgopal.

The structured fleet management and Eicher’s continuous follow-up ensure that the entire operation runs efficiently. “We’ve seen how effective it is when technology and human resources work in tandem. Trained drivers are essential in maintaining safety and discipline, particularly when transporting thousands of students daily,” he adds.

RDL’s approach to student comfort goes beyond aesthetic or superficial features. “On average, a child spends around three hours daily in the school bus. Over the course of a year, that adds up to nearly 32 days of continuous travel. Comfort is not just about large seats or air-conditioning; it is about ergonomics, posture support, and ensuring that children arrive at school ready to learn,” he says.

Eicher buses, he explains, are designed with advanced chassis engineering and ergonomic layouts, ensuring a smooth ride that reduces fatigue and long-term health impacts. “It’s not just about convenience — it’s about the long-term wellbeing and concentration of the children, which directly affects their academic performance.”

As the transport sector looks to greener alternatives, RDL is considering cleaner fuel options such as electric or CNG-powered buses. Deepak Rajgopal remarks, “Eicher has consistently focused on environmental sustainability. Their R&D ensures vehicles are energy-efficient and eco-friendly. While we don’t currently operate electric buses, we recognize that electric mobility is the future, and Eicher’s expertise will be invaluable in making the transition.”

A strong fleet is only as reliable as the service ecosystem supporting it. Eicher’s Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) and pan-India service network give RDL the confidence of uninterrupted operations. “With thousands of touch points across the country, Eicher ensures that we are never left stranded or frustrated,” he says.

Eicher’s ‘Reach & Recovery’ initiative guarantees that any service call within 100 km is responded to within three hours, with vehicle restoration within 18 hours. “Additionally, Eicher provides a convenient dashboard to track live status of fleet vehicles in workshops, allowing us to manage operations efficiently,” he adds.

One of RDL’s key missions is to promote regulated and safe transport amidst the challenges posed by unregulated private operators. “Our collaborations with OEMs like Eicher allow us to create awareness and engage all stakeholders — schools, parents, children, and the community. Children are the future leaders, and it is our responsibility to ensure they learn the right values of safety and discipline. Joint initiatives between OEMs, operators, and the community foster a safe, reliable, and responsible transport ecosystem,” emphasizes Deepak Rajgopal.

With a strong vision, committed team, and a trusted partner like Eicher, Royal Durga Logistics continues to redefine school transportation, ensuring that safety, comfort, and efficiency remain the cornerstones of its journey forward.
