As the automotive industry shifts toward zonal architectures and Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), Microchip Technology has introduced its new LAN866x family of 10BASE-T1S endpoint devices with Remote Control Protocol (RCP), designed to simplify in-vehicle Ethernet networking and reduce system complexity.

Automakers are increasingly challenged to connect a growing number of sensors, actuators, and control units within vehicles. Traditional designs rely on separate microcontrollers and custom software for each node, leading to higher costs and longer development cycles. Microchip’s LAN866x endpoints aim to eliminate these inefficiencies by offering a software-less, standards-based solution that directly translates Ethernet packets to local digital interfaces.
By enabling centralised control of edge nodes for data streaming and device management, the LAN866x family allows designers to extend Ethernet connectivity to the very edge of the vehicle network. Its 10BASE-T1S multidrop topology supports an all-Ethernet zonal architecture that reduces wiring, integration time, and cost—critical factors in next-generation vehicle platforms.
The endpoints are tailored for high-demand automotive applications such as lighting, audio, and general control systems. They can directly bridge Ethernet data to digital interfaces controlling LED drivers, microphones, speakers, and various sensors, creating a more efficient and responsive in-vehicle communication environment.
Mr. Charlie Forni, Corporate Vice President of Microchip’s networking and communications business unit, said, “With the addition of these RCP endpoint devices, Microchip’s Single Pair Ethernet product line empowers designers to realize a true all-Ethernet architecture for Software-Defined Vehicles. We are committed to delivering innovative solutions and supporting our customers with global technical expertise, comprehensive documentation, and development tools to help bring vehicles to market faster.”
Microchip’s Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) portfolio includes transceivers, bridges, switches, and development tools that enable high-speed, reliable data transmission over a single twisted pair cable. Supporting 10BASE-T1S, 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1, and higher speed standards, these solutions are engineered to simplify wiring, enhance scalability, and ensure interoperability across automotive, industrial, and building automation sectors.
