Gore sets sights on India’s EV Future with High-Reliability Venting Solutions

Gore, a global leader in advanced materials science, is gearing up for a strategic expansion into India at a defining moment in the country’s electric mobility journey. With India pushing aggressively toward electrification across passenger and commercial vehicle segments, the demand for high-reliability components – especially those safeguarding sensitive EV electronics – is rising sharply. Against this backdrop, Gore’s proven expertise in expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane technology positions it as a high-value solutions provider for OEMs and Tier-1s targeting world-class durability and performance.

In this conversation with MOTORINDIA & EV Tech News, Mr. Sumit Setia, Country Sales Manager, Gore India, elaborates on the company’s core competencies, its India market strategy, and the road ahead as it seeks to become a trusted technology partner for India’s rapidly growing EV ecosystem.

Could you give us an overview of Gore’s core competencies and product portfolio – particularly the technologies most relevant to electric vehicles – and how they set you apart from existing solutions in the market?

Gore is a global materials science company whose innovations are built on deep expertise in expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). This proprietary membrane technology delivers microporous breathability combined with exceptional resistance to water, dust, and contaminants, enabling reliable protection for sensitive electronic systems. With more than 35 years of leadership in automotive venting, Gore has consistently pioneered industry-shaping solutions – welded and adhesive vents to developing advanced venting technologies for EV electronics, ADAS sensors, and e-Axle systems.

How do you assess India’s growing EV ecosystem across passenger and commercial vehicles, and where do you see your technologies making the most immediate impact?

The Government of India has introduced a comprehensive E-Vehicle Policy to promote local EV manufacturing, with a minimum investment threshold of around US$ 500 million and no upper limit. The nation has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net-zero status by 2070, with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) positioned as primary powertrains. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also set ambitious EV30@2030 targets – 30% of newly registered private passenger cars, 70% of commercial passenger cars, and 80% of two-wheelers to be electric by 2030.

Gore’s solutions are especially suited for EVs due to the segment’s need for highly reliable and robust venting systems that can withstand harsh environmental conditions. Our expectation is to become a trusted technology partner for India’s OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, leveraging our membrane technology strengths and deep automotive application expertise.

Which EV applications are you primarily targeting for your venting solutions in India – such as battery packs, electric drive units, onboard chargers, or control modules? How are your products engineered to address local challenges like high temperatures, humidity, dust, and varying road conditions?

Key details on product applications, including specific EV system integrations, are referenced in Gore’s technical documentation. These cover a broad range of components such as battery enclosures, power electronics, and drive units, all engineered to withstand India’s demanding operating conditions characterised by heat, humidity, dust, and rough terrain.

What will your go-to-market approach be for India? Do you plan to work directly with OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, or are you exploring strategic collaborations or local partnerships to accelerate adoption within the EV supply chain?

Our go-to-market approach includes direct sales capabilities in India, supported by an application engineering team based in the APAC region to serve Indian customers. We are already working closely with OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers. At the same time, we are evaluating opportunities to enhance local support, whether through strategic partnerships, or distribution collaborations. These options will help us strengthen our presence and serve customers more efficiently.

What are your plans in terms of manufacturing, sourcing, and R&D presence? And over the next five years, what milestones or market segments do you envision contributing the most to your growth in India?

Our ambition is to become a reliable technology partner within the Indian automotive industry while sustaining double-digit growth over the next five years. As electrification accelerates, segments such as EV power electronics, battery systems, and next-generation propulsion technologies are expected to be key contributors to our growth.
