Eicher Pro Plus Series: A Strategic Leap Towards Smarter, Safer, and Sustainable Trucking

When Eicher Trucks and Buses unveiled their next-generation Pro Plus Series at the state-of-the-art Experience Centre in Indore, it wasn’t just a product showcase; it was a statement of intent. The company, part of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), is charting a bold path in India’s commercial vehicle transformation, blending reliability with digital sophistication. Rajesh Rajgor, who was present at the launch, observed how the company’s leadership came together to outline this new vision.

In a landscape where India’s commercial vehicles segment is evolving rapidly; driven by infrastructure growth, tighter regulations, and rising customer expectations; Eicher Trucks and Buses, part of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), has unveiled the Pro Plus Series, a next-generation platform that blends engineering precision with digital intelligence.

At a recent media briefing, senior leaders from VECV; Bhagwan K. Bindiganavile, EVP – Strategic Planning, Brand & Communications, Vishal Mathur, EVP – Light & Medium Duty Trucks and Eicher Power Solutions, and Sachin Agarwal, EVP – Product Development, Eicher Trucks & Buses; outlined how the company is positioning itself at the intersection of operational efficiency, sustainability, and driver empowerment.

Opening the media address, Bhagwan recalled, VECV’s journey began 17 years ago as a joint venture between Eicher Motors and the Volvo Group. Since then, the company has consistently adapted to India’s fast-changing regulatory and economic environment. A defining moment came in 2020, when India leapt directly from BS-IV to BS-VI emission norms, compressing years of transformation into a few months and pushing OEMs to reimagine their portfolios. “From electromobility and alternate fuels to connectivity and digital logistics – our customers are navigating change daily. Our job is to help them stay ahead,” he said.

‘Mileage ka Badshah’ in a Tech-First World

Fuel efficiency remains central to Eicher’s value proposition, with Bhagwan pointing out that diesel still constitutes around 55% of a fleet’s operating costs. “Even a 0.1 km/l improvement in mileage can mean lakhs in savings for a large fleet. That’s real money and that’s why we’ve earned the title ‘Mileage ka Badshah’,” he added. While the technologies and platforms may evolve, the business fundamentals that matter to customers remain the same; and Eicher’s strategy is to stay rooted in delivering those outcomes.

VECV’s leaders also acknowledged the changing contours of Indian logistics. Faster highways, e-commerce-led distribution models, and GST-driven interstate fluidity have made uptime, reliability, and digital visibility as important as torque and tonnage. In response, Eicher has built a strong foundation in telematics and AI, with over 3.5 lakh connected vehicles already on Indian roads, much before connected services became a regulatory mandate.

The company’s “My Eicher” platform enables real-time vehicle tracking, fuel coaching, predictive maintenance alerts, and over 160 digital touchpoints to enhance uptime and lower lifecycle costs. “If a vehicle is about to develop a fault, we alert the customer in advance. That’s the value of predictive analytics. Downtime is expensive; we’re here to prevent it,” Bhagwan said.

Sustainability, too, is front and centre. Eicher has been an early mover in CNG adoption and is actively developing solutions across electric, LNG, hydrogen combustion, and fuel cell technologies. The company is also part of the public transport electrification movement; with its electric buses now operational in cities across India. At the same time, its Pithampur plant in Madhya Pradesh manufactures engines not just for India, but for global markets; powering Volvo Group trucks under brands like Mack, Renault, and UD Trucks. “We’ve been making in India for the world since 2013,” Bhagwan remarked.

‘Make in India for the World’ – Pro Plus Series

Building on this foundation, Vishal Mathur shared an update on Eicher’s recent momentum. The company clocked 8% year-on-year growth in Q1 FY25, with a strong showing in both conventional and electric segments. Its market share in the light and medium-duty (LMD) segment touched 36%; a record. The aftersales network now spans 850+ touchpoints, with over 350 workshops and 8,000+ retail outlets, ensuring rapid and reliable service coverage.

“With the festive season approaching and infrastructure projects gaining pace, we’re optimistic about even stronger growth in the second half,” Vishal noted.

It was against this backdrop that the Pro Plus Series was unveiled. Engineered to address India’s evolving mobility demands, the range covers GVW capacities from 5T to 18.25T, and body lengths from 10 ft to 33 ft, significantly reducing the need for aftermarket modifications. Customers can choose from multiple engine options; 2L, 3L, and 3.8L in LMD, and larger powertrains for heavier-duty needs.

“From high deck pharma applications to intra-city logistics, we’ve got a configuration for every 500 kg payload increment,” Vishal explained. This level of modularity is not just about variety; it’s about right-sizing solutions to match use cases precisely, improving efficiency and total cost of ownership.

Driver-Centric Innovations

On the human side of the machine, Sachin Agarwal detailed how driver comfort and safety have shaped Eicher’s cabin philosophy. Even before regulations like GSR 886 mandated air-conditioned cabins, Eicher had already begun rolling them out; treating comfort as an enabler of productivity, not a luxury.

“Our HVAC system is integrated with the engine in a way that doesn’t significantly affect fuel economy,” Sachin said. Different cooling modes cater to diverse driver expectations; whether from younger operators or veterans of the road. Crucially, the AC units come with dust filters and sealed clutches to ensure reliable performance even in India’s harshest climates.

Cabins: A Strategic Bet Long Before Mandates

The cabins have also been redesigned for ergonomics, better airflow, and fatigue reduction. “A driver can’t be productive if they’re uncomfortable. Our trucks treat the driver as a professional, not just a user,” he stressed. With better seats, wider visibility, and smarter layouts, Eicher is making a strategic bet on reducing driver attrition; a growing challenge across the logistics sector.

Perhaps one of Eicher’s most forward-looking decisions was to offer fully built cabin trucks years before it became a norm. This approach is now bearing fruit, allowing customers faster deployment, better safety, and consistent quality. “We’ve believed in this model long before others joined in. It’s safer, more modern, and just makes business sense,” Sachin added.

Looking ahead, VECV is aligning its roadmap with national goals; from reducing logistics costs (currently at ~13% of GDP) to enhancing gender diversity in driving through inclusive training programs. The company continues to co-create products with customers, incorporating on-ground feedback into product upgrades and service improvements. “This is not just about launching trucks. It’s about enabling transformation; for our customers, for drivers, and for the nation,” Bhagwan concluded.

With the Pro Plus Series, Eicher isn’t simply responding to change; it is helping shape the future of Indian logistics: smarter, safer, and more sustainable.
