The IAA Commercial Vehicles is the ideal platform for finding information on working in freight haulage, transport and logistics. So this year again numerous events will be held to attract young people and inform them about career opportunities. There will be something for everybody, from school leavers to engineers.
The event “Become a Truck Driver! An Exciting Occupation, a Modern Workplace, and a Secure Job” is directed at youngsters who are about to finish school and choose a career. The sector urgently needs new recruits, because not enough young people are training to become truck drivers. The Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung (BGL), the German freight transport association, will run the event jointly with the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) on September 30. It will provide information on how the training is organised and options for specialising and climbing the career ladder in transport and logistics.
Professional truck drivers will give youngsters insights into their varied day-to-day work, and the participants can then have a look at their potential future workplaces at the exhibition stands.
Another specialist event
Initial and continuing training will be the focus of the IAA symposium organised by the publishers Verlag Heinrich Vogel and the VDA. The event entitled “Professional Driver Qualification: Review, status quo and foresight” will answer questions about the European Commission’s proposed amendment to Directive 2003/59/EC, on which the German Professional Driver Qualification Act (BKrFQG) is based, and with it the initial qualification and periodic training for truck drivers.
Suggestions for corrections and modifications from the ad-hoc working group and practical experience from the first and second waves of in-service training will be presented. This specialist event will be held on September 25.
The work of long-distance truck drivers, with its social and economic setting, was the subject of the recent ZF “future study” on long-distance drivers. Building on the first “future study”, which was initiated by ZF Friedrichshafen AG and the trade magazine FERNFAHRER in 2012, it examines current and future developments in all relevant areas and their impacts on the situation of drivers. The results of the study will be presented on September 30.
“goING” to showcase engineering as an occupation
For the eighth time now, VDA is holding its information event “goING – young engineers for the automotive industry” at IAA. It will take place daily from September 29 to October 2, presenting numerous national and international career opportunities for qualified engineers in the fields of vehicle technology, combustion engines and electric motors, electronics and mechanics, sensor systems and software.
Engineers will describe their day-to-day work and the requirements placed on applicants. University lecturers will also be on hand to present current Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses. Then the participants can take a tour of the various corporate IAA stands to hear more about specific topics and make initial contacts with manufacturers and suppliers.
Students already taking relevant degree courses are the target group of the lecture event entitled “workING 2014 – prospects in the automotive industry” to be held on September 29. It will provide not only insights into today’s work in the automotive industry but also a forum for discussions with employees from the companies’ specialist units and personnel departments.
In addition to job prospects in the automotive industry, the event will showcase various entry programmes and options for co-operation in the form of Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations. After this a walking tour of the trade show grounds will give the students a chance to obtain more detailed information.
The new career section called “job and career at IAA” in Hall 23 will be the location for manufacturers and suppliers to present themselves as attractive employers and provide information about occupations and development opportunities. Interested visitors will be able to talk with experts from the motor-vehicle trades, industry, services and sales.
