CGTA Annual Meet reviews challenges faced by transporters

The Chennai Goods Transport Association (CGTA) celebrated its 45th Anniversary Meet and 20th Year of CGTA Charitable Trust in Chennai on 18th March by attracting delegates from all over the country.

CGTA has made tremendous progress since inception and has been growing in size and stature. As many as 300 well-established and reputed transport companies are members of the association, most of them having pan-India operations and a wide network of branches. The CGTA members together own about 6,500 HCVs & trailers and 3,000 LCVs, providing direct employment to around 44,000 people and indirect employment to nearly two lakh people.

During the Anniversary Meet, key issues including the impact of GST on trucking and its implications on truckers, the views of logistics managers’ on industry changes, vehicle technology and its impact on goods transportation were discussed in detail. Mr. Manish Saxena from Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Ltd., Dr. Saravanan from Ashok Leyland, Mr. Satyanarayana from Mahindra & Mahindra, Mr. Somnath Das from Marico, Mr. Raghuram from Samsung Electronics and Mr. Kannan V from Aditya Birla Retail Ltd., shared their thoughts on the topics.

Earlier, while addressing a press conference, Mr. Rajinder Singh, Past President, CGTA, Mr. P.K. Agarwal,  President, Mr. Anil Gupta, Vice President, Mr. B.N. Sharma, Managing Trustee, and Mr. Sanjay Nagpal, Chairman – Celebration Committee, who constitute the CGTA committee, said the Association had appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to allot about 10 acres of land on the outskirts of the city to set up a transport nagar on the Outer Ring Road of Greater Chennai that would provide enough space for parking tractor-trailers, trucks, and also house simulators to provide heavy vehicle driver training for drivers.

They also said that the present facility at Madhavaram near north Chennai, has space to park only 400 vehicles, though there are more than 20,000 transit trucks in greater Chennai.The committee also pointed out the need to set up a PPP model for creating the Transport Nagar in Greater Chennai which has connectivity of ports, airports, railways and roads. The other challenges faced by the industry related to toll tax hurdles, inadequate highway facilities for parking of vehicles and resting of drivers, police harassment of drivers, tax issues, etc. were also discussed.

The evening concluded with the distribution of Awards to the CGTA members.
