NIQR session on TQM well attended

The National Institution for Quality & Reliability (NIQR) jointly organised with the Chennai chapter an enlightening session on “The TQM Way of Thinking” at which Prof. Yasutoshi Washio made his major presentation.

Mr. S.N. Eisenhower, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu State Council, and Director – Operations, Saint Gobain Glass India Ltd., was the chief guest on the occasion.

In his welcome address, Mr. R. Sivanesan, Sr. Vice President – CQ, Ashok Leyland Ltd., and National President, NIQR, briefly outlined the role of NIQR and its activities. Prof. Washio and Mr. Eisenhower were introduced by Mr. P.K. Aggarwal, National Vice President, NIQR, and Mr. K.N. Krishnamurthy, past National President, respectively.

Prof. Washio started his presentation with a broad outline of TQM in today’s Japanese and Indian industries. He explained the basics of TQM by highlighting the seven main steps – customer focus (first), quality first, fact control – action / decision based on FACT, PDCA cycle, recurrence prevention, respect for people, and focus more on “Process” than “Result”.

The presentation was much appreciated by the members present.

The question & answer session that followed was very lively. There were around 200 delegates comprising NIQR life members and senior officials from leading organizations in and around Chennai as special invitees.

In his presidential address, Mr. Eisenhower touched on the various aspects of TQM. He also highlighted the sheer coincidence of Shishya (Mr. Eisenhower) presiding over the lecture by Guru (Prof. Wahio). He further focused on the two main needs of all industrial workers, namely Skill and Will.

Mr. S. Rajasekaran, Chairman, NIQR Chennai Branch, proposed a vote of thanks.

Mr. S. Ramachandran, past National Secretary, was the Master of Ceremony for the program.
