Logistics whose main function is to carry goods and materials from place to place is the backbone of economic growth. Logistics management comprises materials and channel management, as well as physical distribution and supply chain management. It also includes warehouse management system which takes control of stocks and streamlines movement of goods in the storage units.

The logistics sector has been instrumental in shaping India’s growth over the last several years and has proved itself a key differentiator for all major businesses. One leading company started four decades ago to cater to the complex transportation needs of Indian industries is the Delhi-based Indo Arya Logistics, previously known as Arya’s Central Transport of India Pvt. Ltd. This prominent integrated logistics provider is fully equipped to offer tailor-made solutions related to all the three modes of transportation – air, water and surface.

Explaining the company growth over the years, Mr. Dushyant Arya, Director, Indo Arya Logistics, told MOTORINDIA in a casual discussion in Delhi that the initial days of business and the challenges faced were indeed enormous. However, they were all successfully overcome with a strategic management approach.

He said: “We started in 1974 as a one route trucking company with a single office. We then grew in different parts of the country. In 1987, we started a warehousing and logistics business for a client who was in dire need of warehouses. Since then we began building modern warehouses. Today we have altogether 230 branches all over the country.”

Third party logistics

Increasing outsourcing of logistics has led to the concept of third party and fourth party logistics which has transformed the way companies do business. On an average, Indian companies today outsource about 52 per cent of transportation and logistics activities compared to 10-15 per cent a decade ago.

Outlining how the company registered further growth, Mr. Arya said: “We started doing 3PL business in 2003 when there was a big business boom. In 2006, we pioneered modern warehousing and built the largest single-floor warehouse in India. From then on, we are adding more and more warehouses every month. We have currently more than 50 superior warehouses strategically located across the country.”

With its modern fleet of over 200 GPS-enabled owned trucks and trailers, Indo Arya is setting new benchmarks in the industry and becoming a preferred choice amongst companies. Not all parcel shipments are made by truck, and the company relies upon rail and air also to deliver materials to different destinations. “Since rail cargo is yet another mode of transportation, the company started parcel cargo by rail in 1999. It started running an entire train between Delhi and Bangalore for parcel cargo, thus setting a rare example in goods delivery. Trucking still remains its core business, and it keeps expanding the fleet by 10 per cent every year”, added Mr. Arya.

With rising investments and the new infrastructural projects coming up, the logistics and supply chain industry is poised for a speedier growth. Indo Arya has currently built 6.75 lakhs sq.ft. of custom warehouses and is now planning to expand it further in the next few years. With trade and e-commerce picking up, the company feels there will be greater demand for single-space bigger warehouses where customers can store their goods on a share basis.

Driver comfort

According to Mr. Arya, his company has been taking full care of its drivers and meeting all their major needs. The new generation trucks coming up today have modern cabins fitted with air-conditioners and excellent seating to ensure optimum driver comfort, less fatigue and higher driver productivity.

Indo Arya, along with a few associations, has now been building several motels with hygiene facilities and ample parking spaces across transhipment hubs to make them feel at home. Further, it has an extensive clientele from all the leading sectors, such as Tata Motors, MRF, Apollo tyres, BHEL, L&T, ITC, Reliance, Aditya Birla, Coca Cola, etc.
