Commercial vehicle exports grow despite drop in domestic sales

The Indian auto industry produced a total of 1,809,304 vehicles, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and two- and and three-wheelers in June 2014 as against 1,621,859 units in June 2013, registering a growth of 11.56 per cent.

Domestic sales of passenger vehicles grew by 1.30 per cent in April-June 2014 over the same period last year. Within the passenger vehicles segment, passenger cars and utility vehicles grew by 2.24 per cent and 3.93 per cent respectively, while vans registered negative growth of 13.72 per cent in April-June 2014 over the same period last year.

The commercial vehicles segment registered a degrowth of 16.13 per cent in April-June 2014 as compared to the same period last year. Medium & heavy commercial vehicle sales declined by 9.87 per cent and light commercial vehicles dropped by 19.24 per cent as compared to the same period last year.

Three-wheelers sales grew by 11.64 per cent and passenger carriers and goods carriers by 13.12 per cent and 5.57 per cent respectively. Two-wheelers sales registered growth of 13.70 per cent over April-June 2013. Within the two-wheelers segment, scooters, motorcycles and mopeds grew by 28.62 per cent, 9.83 per cent and 2.82 per cent respectively in April-June 2014 over the same period in 2013.

In April-June 2014, overall automobile exports grew by 20.19 per cent. Passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and two-wheelers grew by 6.90 per cent, 20.88 per cent and 29.51 per cent respectively, while exports of three-wheelers declined by 6.57 per cent in April-June 2014 over the same period last year.
